Catnip

EZRA RECOGNIZED the handsome young waiter from Fat City. He came in every day for a bag of gumballs and a chocolate truffle.

“You’re gonna rot your teeth,” he chided gently, and the boy—who had a square jaw and big brown eyes like Miguel, but not as much character in the mouth and too much space between the eyes—smiled.

“Aw, that’s sweet—you care,” he bantered, and Ezra replied without thought.

“I do. It would be a shame if you got a cavity and couldn’t eat any candy anymore!”

The boy leaned against the chocolate counter, blocky, muscular body molded against the glass. “Yeah, that would suck. So how come you always eat at River Burger? I mean, I’m just down the street—I’m closer!”

Ezra laughed. “’Cause Mari and me we have a deal—I get sandwiches and she has an emergency babysitter card over my head.”

This wasn’t entirely true—Ezra paid for his sandwiches, and Mari was still looking for time to get a date so Ezra could babysit and pay her back for that day of kindness with Rico and Derek. But Ezra had met Joshie and played with him before and after a couple of the softball games. Even if Candy Heaven wasn’t playing River Burger, Finn’s family still showed up to cheer Adam on. Ezra and Joshie really had bonded—the little kid was inquisitive and liked to play, but he also had no problem just relaxing languidly against Ezra and talking.

It was just that Ezra liked going to River Burger for lunch—he saw Finn and Mari and their sweet dad, whom everybody called “Mr. Stewart” even though they were all grown-ups. Why would he want to screw that up by going to a really nice restaurant in his work clothes—most likely alone?

“Yeah, but, you know, you could eat with me,” the guy wheedled.

“Does he even know your name?” Miguel said from his spot stocking barrels.

Ezra looked over and smiled. It was hard not to smile at Miguel—besides the angel face, he was also a good egg on the whole. Hanging out with him, being friends, learning the ropes around his new town—all of that would have been so much lonelier without Miguel’s help. It was too bad he was still gone over Adam, or Ezra would think about….

No. No—better that he not.

Miguel was too nice a guy to get involved with a hot mess like Ezra. If nothing else, hanging with Miguel’s family and Finn’s family, and even Rico and Derek, had taught Ezra that his concept of how real people spent their time had been way, way damaged by his childhood. He’d always assumed that people worked first and lived second, and that the home was a showcase to intimidate business clients and show other people how you spent your wealth.

But the past month, he’d lived largely on his salary from Candy Heaven (with a few exceptions, like the Xbox and his contribution to the first month’s rent in August, before he’d gotten paid) and had spent his spare time in an apartment
